7. Can the charges get dropped?
Possibly. It depends on the case, the prosecutor, and the available evidence. Prosecutors are usually eager to offer plea bargains so they can avoid going to trial.
8. Do I need a lawyer?
Defendants in criminal cases should always retain an attorney at law for these three reasons:
- In most cases, defendants can stay home from court as long as their lawyer appears in their place;
- Attorneys are much more skilled than non-attorneys at defending against criminal charges and negotiating with the D.A.; and
- Prosecutors take defendants more seriously if they have an attorney and usually offer better deals.
