The Shasta County Jail is a 483-bed correctional facility housing male and female, adult detainees and inmates sentenced for California misdemeanor and felony crimes. Many of those in custody are awaiting adjudication for criminal charges. Located in Redding, CA, this detention center is under the jurisdictional oversight of the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office.

The Redding Jail has been dealing with chronic overcrowded conditions, a situation that has been described as “critical.” An expansion project adding over 100 beds to the facility was completed in January, 2019, but per media reports, Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko called the project “….not a solution for our jail bed shortage.” Shasta County recently started a “Chronic Offender Accountability Program” aimed at keeping “career criminals” in jail longer, according to Redding.com.

The city of Redding is located about 160 miles north of Sacramento, just 120 miles south of the Oregon border.

1. Shasta County Inmate Search

At this date, Shasta County does not provide an online inmate search function, but you can use California’s “Inmate Locator” to verify if your friend or loved one is in custody at the jail. By inputting a last name, you can call up a list of booked individuals, who are identified by their age and date of admission.

Alternatively, you can call the Shasta County Jail at (530) 245-6100 to obtain information about an inmate, his or her criminal charges and bail, if granted.

2. Posting Bail

Most arrested individuals will be granted temporary freedom upon payment of bail. To determine your friend or loved one’s bail status, you will need to call the jail. After obtaining the correct bail amount, you can pay bail in cash at the jail reception area or provide a cashier’s check or money order for payment. (If the amount is $1,000 or under, a personal check may be accepted.) Checks should be made out to Shasta County Superior Courts. You can also use the fee-based services of a licensed bail bondsman.

3. Communication with Inmates

A California detainee will have the legal right to make three, free (local) phone calls, whether to friends, family or in search of a criminal lawyer. Incoming calls of a personal nature are not accepted for Shasta County Detention Center inmates, and messages cannot be passed along by staff.

Depending upon their disciplinary status, most inmates will have access to telephones in the jail’s common areas. All outgoing personal calls are made on a collect basis, and you must set up an account to receive calls.

The Shasta County Jail uses an outside vendor, “ConnectNetwork” to facilitate “Advance Pay” calls for inmates. This fee-based service allows you to prepay for phone minutes with your credit/debit card. You can set up and fund your account 24/7 using the website or by calling (877) 650-8314.

Remember, personal inmate phone calls are subject to monitoring and recording by the jail. To avoid causing damage to an inmate’s case, please refrain from discussing criminal charges over the phone.

4. Shasta Inmate Cash Accounts

Inmates in residence at the Shasta County Correctional Facility will receive meals and basic hygiene supplies, but most will want to make purchases through commissary. An inmate cash account (set up initially with available funds confiscated at booking) can be used to purchase comfort items from the weekly commissary delivery service. There are a number of options, including snacks, toiletries, stationary materials, etc.

Family and/or friends can contribute to commissary funding by depositing money in the inmate trust account.

This can be accomplished in one of several ways:

• Lobby Kiosk – The Redding Jail has a kiosk machine in the lobby, which accepts cash, credit/debit cards and electronic transfers from your bank account.
• Online – You can also pay online after setting up an account at inmatedeposits.com
• Telephone – Or, call (866) 345-1884 to set up an account and make deposits by phone.

Deposits by mail are not accepted at this time. Note that funds must be on deposit in the inmate’s account before 8:00 a.m. on Monday for the week’s order. There is a maximum spending limit for Shasta County Jail inmates: $100 a week.

5. Shasta County Visitation

Inmates housed in the Shasta County Detention Facility are allowed two personal visits a week. There is a limit of one visit per day, and a maximum of two people can visit at one time. Each jail visit is 30 minutes long. (Note: Residents with an “inmate worker” status are allowed three, one-hour visits per week.)

Visitation in Redding takes place every day of the week; visiting hours are 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., with additional afternoon hours (1:00 to 4:00 p.m.) on weekends. An online visitation schedule delineates visiting hours in the Main Shasta County Jail by housing classification.

The Redding Correctional Facility has the following rules for visitors:

• Minors aged 17 and under cannot visit unless they enter the facility in the company of a parent or legal guardian
• All adult visitors must have proper identification, i.e. a current driver’s license
• Personal items, including purses, may not be brought into the visitation area. No cameras or photographic equipment is allowed
• No smoking in the jail
• Staff will not accept mail, books or packaged items for inmates

Note: You will be subject to a search of your person and property and should expect to pass through a metal detector to reach the visitation area. Also, all visits are subject to monitoring and recording, so avoid discussing pending criminal charges.

6. Mail for Shasta County Inmates

Although the Shasta County Sheriff does not post a list of contraband items for inmates, it is best to avoid enclosures other than standard size, nonsexual photographs (no polaroids), and packages are generally not accepted for inmates.

7. Shasta County Jail Security

The Redding Jail is a “high security” correctional facility. After an initial assessment during intake, inmates will be housed according to gender and criminal classification. The vast majority of inmates at this detention center are male; the facility is equipped to hold up to 403 men and 80 women.

In compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office expresses a commitment to maintaining a correctional environment that is free from sexual misconduct. Information is provided on jail policies and reporting for alleged incidents of sexual harassment or sexual assault, for which there is “zero tolerance.”

8. Alternative Custody

Shasta County offers a Work Release program for convicted offenders who qualify for the opportunity. Participants can live at home on Home Electronic Confinement while they perform public service assignments or other work. Types of work include road crew, cemetery cleanup and food production in the 7-acre garden area at the jail. Fees are collected from participants in the work program.

In a collaboration with Shasta College, an educational “STEP-UP” program is offered. This program allows some inmates to attend school to earn Career Technical Education Certificates or Associates Degrees in specific subjects.
